In 2016 I started to become interested in bat ecology. Subsequently, I became interested in bat photography and I wanted to capture their most amazing behaviour and ability. Flight. These 6 photos document my journey into inflight bat photography.

This image is the culmination of years of tinkering with motion sensors, flashes and bats. After perfecting the inflight shot technique I started playing around with strobe lights in an attempt to capture the motion of flying. Each night a group of large footed myotis (Myotis macrops) would fly in circles around the two tunnels for several minutes. Using the predictable flight-path I created a unique photo of this small and threatened species.

After three nights of practice I was confident that we could set up our gear efficiently and silently without disturbing the ghost bats. We arrived at the site late in the afternoon and set up. After several hours of nervous waiting one ghost bat few by. Nothing. Another flew by, out of focus. When the last bat flew past I jumped with joy as I saw this on my camera. It's not perfect but it is one of three inflight Queensland ghost bat photos in existence.
